Hynes Apartment

(HOUSING – BUILT – SYDNEY)

This project pursues the idea of minimal intervention for maximum effect within a restricted existing apartment in a heritage building in Potts Point, Sydney.

The existing galley kitchen was reconfigured into a single wall of joinery, providing a more spacious configuration and connecting with the living and dining areas.

However, the major move was the relocation of the front door from the study to beside the kitchen, making the study a self-contained (rather than a walk-through) space. Joinery was designed to close away the study when not in use.

Joinery for the study was concealed in one wall, and a sliding door (designed to carry artworks) was added to hide the entire study from view.

The mezzanine bedroom was upgraded, as was the walk-in dressing room area.

A new loft storage area was added in the main bedroom utilising the height of the existing space.

Finally, the main bathroom was turned into very moody retreat with all black walls, floor and ceiling and mirrors all round.
