2016-17 Frankston Station Design Competition – $25M

This was a Two Stage Architectural Design Competition. Stage 1 was open and anonymous with five finalists selected and paid to participate in Stage 2. The winning architects, Genton from Melbourne, were engaged by DEDJTR and construction of the project is complete with the station opening in October 2018.

Clients: Office of the Victorian Government Architect (OVGA) and the Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR)

Scope: Competition Advisor, Brief Writer and Registrar.

Stephen Varady managed the entire competition process from start to finish, liaising with the DEDJTR steering committee and the OVGA throughout the preparation and running of the competition. Stephen collated the required information, texts, drawings and photos, wrote the Competition Brief and Conditions, assisted in the Jury selection, and then managed the Stage 1 and Stage 2 Judging processes, including the Stage 2 Capability requirements. He also liaised between the winning architect and Competition Sponsor during their contract negotiations.

2014-15 Green Square Design Competition for Gunyama Park & Aquatic Centre – $50M

This was a Two Stage Architectural Design Competition. Stage 1 was open and anonymous with five finalists selected and paid to participate in Stage 2. The winning architects, Andrew Burges Architects, Sydney (with Grimshaw, Sydney), were engaged by City of Sydney, with construction of the project underway and due for completion in 2021.

1994-95 Wagga Wagga Civic Centre Competition – $12M

This was a Two Stage Architectural Design Competition. Stage 1 was open and anonymous with five finalists selected and paid to participate in Stage 2. The winning architects, Garner Davis from Melbourne, were engaged by City of Wagga Wagga, and construction of the project is complete with the Civic Centre opening in February 1999. 20 years after this competition, Jill Garner became Victorian Government Architect.
